Phosphorus Deposition to Hawaii via Precipitation

چکیده

Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii may be an important source of bioavailable phosphorus to the Hawaiian Island Chain. Because it has been hypothesized that these volcanic islands undergo a shift from nitrogen to phosphorus limitation over geologic time, atmospheric phosphorus deposition could play a considerable role in ecosystem processes, especially on the older, more highly weathered islands such as Kauai. We measured the soluble reactive phosphorus (S-PP flux in weekly rainwater samples collected on Kauai and the Big Island between December 1998 and July 2000. SRP fluxes were 0.14 and 0.27 ± 0.06 mg P m yr on the Big Island and Kauai, respectively. The small variability and low concentrations of arsenate (a gauge of volcanic activity) in the rainwater samples suggests weak and uniform levels of volcanic activity during the sampling period. Given the low atmospheric SRP flux and the lack of high SRP concentrations, we have determined that the volcanic influence on our samples is minimal. Noting the relatively constant volcanic activity during the sampling period, the small data set does not support or refute the hypothesis that Kilauea Volcano can be a significant source of P to the Hawaiian Island Chain.

Atmospheric P deposition to the subtropical North Atlantic: sources, properties, and relationship to N deposition

[1] Biogeochemical studies show that the surface waters of the subtropical North Atlantic are highly phosphorus (P) stressed. Human activity may exacerbate phosphorus stress by enhancing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and raising N/P ratios in deposition. However, the magnitude of this effect is unclear, in part, because atmospherically deposited phosphorus sources are not well known, part...

A Novel Method for Mitigation of Asphaltene Deposition in the Wellstring

Asphaltene precipitation and deposition is a serious problem in many Iranian fields. The deposited asphaltene results in partial or total blockage of the wellbore and wellstring reducing or completely seizing oil production. This paper studies the asphaltene problem and mitigation methods in wellstring systematically. It presents new approach based on the combination of thermodynam...

Is atmospheric phosphorus pollution altering global alpine lake stoichiometry?

Anthropogenic activities have significantly altered atmospheric chemistry and changed the global mobility of key macronutrients. Here we show that contemporary global patterns in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) emissions drive large hemispheric variation in precipitation chemistry. These global patterns of nutrient emission and deposition (N:P) are in turn closely reflected in the water chemist...

Prediction of Solvent Effect on Asphaltene Precipitation at Reservoir Conditions

The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effects of inhibitors or solvents on asphaltene precipitation under reservoir conditions. To this end, the interaction between live oil and solvent, and its side effects on precipitated/dissolved asphaltene were predicted via Miller’s entropy modified polymer solution theory under reservoir conditions. Then, the adjustable parameters of the model ...

Relationships between diffusion parameters and phosphorus precipitation during the POCl3 diffusion process

The POCl3 diffusion process is still a common way to create the pn-junction of Si solar cells. Concerning the screenprinting process, it is necessary to find a compromise between low emitter recombination, low contact resistance and high lateral conductivity. The formation of a homogeneous emitter during the POCl3 diffusion process depends on several diffusion parameters, including duration, te...
